It all started with a simple disease. At first, it was not much of a concern for the human race, much like a mere cold or a small cough. But this disease spread wide across the world, until at least one out of five human beings had it - and still it spread. And then real chaos pursued. For, when the disease hit a human being, and after one week of having the sickness, the human would die. People desperately began searching for cures then, but it was helpless; soon, just about everyone on Earth had the disease. The survivors tried to find their own haven, but the disease lived in every corner, every shadow. It was the end of world - for the humans, that is.
And upon the humans' graves, another race took control. Canines. They, who knew the Earth as Laein, rebuilt the planet from its ruins. Slowly, ever slowly, the remains of the humans' homes and wreckage disintegrated into the barren landscape of the main realms of the canines - Feirn.
When the canines had finished their work of cleansing the world of the humans' poisonous acts, they split into three groups - a group of wolves named the Ventura, a group of coyotes who dubbed themselves as the Seori, and, of course, the dogs, who were aliased as the Straumura. Together, the three groups founded their own separate lands.
Until suddenly a breach wove its way through their tender world. Several rebellions rose when the groups tried to work together to create laws - one of the largest group of rebels was against the law that the groups must live in peace and work together and share food and treasure in times of need. The group believed that each pack should live on its own, dealing with its own problems, not others'. This group separated from the main packs, choosing to live in a desolate land - they became a pack, a pack of thieves and traitorous canines, the Pareil. Many canines, however, call them pirates. The Pareil contains no specific sort of canine - it is a group mixed with varieties of canines, from dogs to foxes. All species, as long as they are some form of canine, are welcome in their group to plunder and terrorize.
Then, through the thin rips and tears in the world of the canines, came three items. These items later became to be known as the Thriene, the greatest treasures of the packs. One item was granted to each of the three founding groups; they were said to be sent from the gods to rescue them from the perilous acts of the Pareil. In the center of each territory the groups found their item - for the Ventura, a diary, for the Seori, a crystal shard hanging by a string, much like a necklace, and for the Straumura, a watch dangling on a silver chain. These items gave the three packs control over different things; the diary gave the wolves the power to see, but not hear, things far away and inform them, the crystal necklace allowed the coyotes to change the lay of the land ( however, they could only modify a few things, like add a bit more water to the river, grow leaves on the trees and change their colors, etc ), and the watch gave the dogs the power to see small flashes of the future and travel back in time, not forward, for a short period of time. However, only the leader of the pack and their soothsayer were granted powers by the gods to use the items - the other creatures of the other packs or lower-ranked canines could not use their item.
The Pareil were outraged that they did not possess any special object. They were so jealous of the other packs that they began to raid them for the Thriene they possessed, but always to no avail - the packs were clever, so they stashed away their items at all times. Only the leader, soothsayer, and a few well-trusted canines knew where they were.
Finally, the Pareil realized it was hopeless - their plans to steal the Thriene would never work. And so the Pareil gathered the most talented sibyls in the country; what for, no one knew, until it was too late. For several years the Pareil remained serene, not attacking the other packs. The three groups were concerned; with growing suspicions, they increased the amount of border patrols. But of course, that would not help with what the pirates were about to do - they were creating their own Thriene.
For months and years the Pareil experimented with the spells of the sibyls and soothsayers and their Lren, or magic, upon an ordinary gray stone. And finally their plans prevailed - they had created the ultimate Thriene - the Tsin, the stone that could control the elements. It was indeed the most powerful of the objects, and for some time, the Thriene became the Fuiene, the three objects of power.
But the gods would not let this happen. They had not given the Pareil a Thriene not only because of their greed and over-ambition, but also because they had been formed on traitorous acts and hatred. And so the gods came to the Pareil before they could destroy the other packs, before they could complete the ultimate plan with the Fuiene. They stole the stone from the Pareil and threw it far across the ocean that the Pareil lived near, to another land. It landed upon millions of other stones, buried deep beneath them and almost impossible to uncover. The Fuiene once more became the Thriene.
Thus the Pareil no longer lived in greed but in fear of the gods, and they returned to their barren shadows, alone and forgotten. The other three packs, relieved and grateful, returned to their usual routines of life. And so the world of the canines is restored to its full balance and serenity once more . . . or is it?
