The sight of Laynor rushing past her caused her to freeze momentarily, turning her head as he passed her. He was a bird, gliding through the air. She had to admit to herself that it was quite impressive, but if he could be like a bird, she could be better. She loved to compete against him, against any wolf, for that matter. She raced up behind him, slowing as he came to a stop before the meadow.
Staring across at the blanket of grass made her tired after the long day she'd had. The wind took the long silky blades in waves, turning the meadow into a sea of green, the moonlight illuminating the area enough for her to make out her usual make-shift bed. She turned to look at Laynor, about to comment on his little performance, but stopped herself once she saw his face, half shadowed by the darkness surrounding them. She smiled, her tail swaying in the soft breeze.
Her expression was met with one of confusion, although he had a smile across his face. Laynor's eyes looked thoughtful, sending a warmth through Ambrosia and tugging at her heart strings. She now imagined her expression matched his, for she had no idea what to expect. "Whats wrong, Laynor? Tired?" She laughed playfully, trying unsuccessfully to change the sudden serious mood. Her smile left her now, but she never broke his gaze, suggesting more meaning behind the question.

Laynor blinked at her. He could tell Ambrosia was struggling to control her feelings too. Oh Verdn, what is happening here? He thought in dismay. They were both so confused . . . if this was a miracle, it was one he wasn't very fond of anymore. He just felt so . . . lost. Like he was stuck in a world of despair. Was it okay to love Ambrosia? Or if he did, would it be betraying Elairn? And did he even want to love her, the female he had only met today?
He sighed. Laynor honestly did not want to hurt Ambrosia's feelings . . . but they were friends for now. He wanted to stick to that before things became too overwhelming. His eyes met hers. "Yes, I suppose I am. Thank you for keeping me company this evening . . . friend."
Laynor made sure to put extra emphasis on the word 'friend.'

Expecting the word "friend" to sting, Ambrosia braced herself for that sinking feeling, only to find herself letting out a huge sigh of relief. She wanted to feel sad about it, but she did not. She felt a little guilty, wondering if it bothered Laynor to know that a friend was all she wanted in him. Her mind began to race; was she only telling herself this to mask the embarrassment? No, she couldn't be. She really did wish this simple word upset her more, perhaps it was because Laynor had meant to soften the blow. Weather she wanted to be or not, she was relieved.
She looked at Laynor once more and smiled, truly happy to have finally made a new friend here. "Well, I had fun. Goodnight, Laynor." She got up and began to walk away, turning around for a moment, for one last tease at him, "You should get some sleep. I bet you're exhausted from that short run of yours." She laughed, turned back around, and walked to her usual resting place, a soft patch of grass beneath a fallen tree branch, which was held up by a large rock.

Laynor heard her soft sigh of relief. He, too, felt a bit happy that she had not taken his words to heart. He smiled. So we can be just friends after all. Perhaps we could be more later . . . but not now. It's too soon - for both of us. A yawn escaped his throat. His teeth flashed white in the light sprinkles of moonlight as his jaws opened, before they quickly closed.
"Yes, hence the reason why you're the first to fall asleep," Laynor taunted gently. But he was too tired to continue talking. With one final glance at Ambrosia, he swept his tail low across the ground and curled up a few feet away from her. His fox-like tail wove around his nose, keeping it warm, before he softly closed his eyes and dozed off.

Ambrosia coiled into a tiny ball, wrapping her tail around her body for warmth. She lay under the tree for a little while, excited to go hunting the next day. She always had trouble sleeping; her mind was never ready to rest. She thought about Laynor and how awkward it had been earlier. She decided to forget about it; she was just happy to have a new friend. Closing her eyes, she began to drift off to sleep. She was exhausted from the day, even though her mind could still keep running for hours.
