The sun was up now, moisture from the earlier rain had already evaporated and the air was warm enough to be comfortable. It was spring, the lively green of the grass and leaves and the beautiful colors of the many wild flowers that grew in this part of Laein were testament to this fact. The plants enjoyed this time to show off, and this, along with the fine weather, made many animals feel content and happy with their lives. All was well, at least in the Straumura Pack territory.
A little black and tan Miniature Dachshund had beenplaying around in investigating the Felnn meadow for hours. Now she was tired. She lay down among the blades of green and small patches of purple and red flowers, as they danced to the gentle breeze. It felt good to the thirteen-year-old, and relaxing. She nodded off for some time before waking to a grumbling stomach.
Now this was a predicament. It was not yet time for the pack to hunt, and Rena had never gone hunting by herself before. She was clueless as to how it all worked. Nevertheless, she would have to learn someday, and someone once said it was instinct anyway. Though being successful depended on mostly experience and a bit of luck.
She stood up, shaking her petite frame, feeling her long and silky-furred ears flap against her head, to get rid of any dirt or debris that might've gotten caught on her. She didn't really care much if she got dirty, but she knew it gets uncomfortable after a time, sometimes even after a bath and grooming. The thought led to several different topics, and the Dachshund almost forgot why she had stood up. Her stomach grumbled, and the female thought she could feel it in her brown-spotted chest, reverberating through her entire body even! This fueled her determination and she decided to get right down to work.
The young dog scanned the terrain with dark brown eyes, nervously shifting her weight on her small paws. There was some movement in the distance, a very small figure moved around in a clump of tall grass, possibly a rabbit. Rena inched forward slowly, though she was still very far from her quarry. After some point however, she quickened her pace, realizing she'd have to get there before her grumbling tummy grew any louder and hindered her hunting.
A few minutes later, she was near enough! The small mammal was looking around, long ears twitching at every sound, failing to notice the predator that stalked it, who easily hid behind the curtain of grass. Then, Rena pounced on the creature. To her dismay, however, it had seen her and managed hopped out of range. The dog chased after her zigzagging prey as it ran into the pack's camp, Eirn, and eventually the bordering Cadinn. Unwilling to enter the large forest, the female stopped, dejected, before turning back to the small meadow.
Rena sighed, plopped back down on the soft grass and said, loudly, "Why can't I catch anything?"
The question seemed a bit strange, the long-haired dog thought now. She had only tried to hunt one creature, yet she spoke as though she had failed many times. When had she gotten so... easy to discourage? She'd have to work on that sometime. Another sigh escaped the female. She closed her eyes and listened quietly, hoping someone would come over and talk to her. The loneliness was getting to her. She wanted company now.
