Keina blinked as he took off. She chuckled devilishly to herself. Hah, that was easy, she thought. Hunting? I don't need to hunt! With one last glance at the area that D had been sitting at, she flicked her tail and set off in the direction of the camp. This would be so simple, like stealing the whiskers off the snout of a pup.
Soon the pack leader entered the Pareil's camp - Sien. It was a large city, although no humans lived in it anymore. Broken, mashed up cars were left in the middle of the streets, and all the buildings had begun to crumble and fall. Yet there were those few buildings that were still in fine condition - like the one that the Pareil lived in. She crawled in through a narrow gap in the wall, into the first room, where the elders, pups, mothers, and most warriors slept. The white tiled floor was cracked, while the brownish-gray carpet was dingy and gross-looking. This toom was not in its best condition; however, when one climbed up the carpeted stairs to the second story, there would be major change. She always kept her room clean - or, at least her servants did.
"Servants!" Keina snarled. Two mangy dogs stumbled to her side. "Y-yes, your Majesty?" They stammered. She rolled her eyes. Pathetic. "Tell the warriors to hunt. Have the elders, pups, and mothers fix up the camp. We're having a feast tomorrow night." She smiled, her pearly teeth flashing in the dim moonlight.
"M-ma'am," one of the servants said, a brown and white male whose ribs stuck out, "the females said they don't w-want to serve you anymore. They t-think their pups shouldn't be warriors so early." Keina's eyes narrowed. She whacked the servant on the side of the head, making him flinch. "Well, if they won't listen," she growled quietly, "make them listen." The servant nodded, and the two scurried off.
Keina rolled her eyes. Servants. It's so hard to find sensible ones these days. Soon she heard the snarls and whimpering of the females; the servants had gathered some warriors, and they were now beating them so they would cooperate. Well, at least they can do their job. She looked to her left, managing to pick out the form of another canine. It looked like a dog; most of the canines in the Pareil were dogs. "You, over there. Go get me some prey to eat. I'm starving." The dog nodded, looking terrified, and ran off. Soon he returned with a pigeon dangling in his jaws. She scowled. "A pigeon?! That's all you can get me?" The dog whimpered. She sighed. "Off with you. Go catch some prey for the feast." He nodded, looking confused, but he didn't complain and scampered off once more.

After a bit, D could see that Keina had left the territory, presumably to go back to camp and prepare for the feast. At the very least, it was Spring, meaning a spike in the amount of prey that would be found around the area. Hunting wouldn't be difficult, but he would have a hell of a time trying to get all the food back to camp. Anyway he didn't plan on contributing too much - just enough to seem polite would suffice. And then... well. He'd just have to see where things went from there.
Honestly, it'd been such a long time since he'd been back to Sien. But he hadn't forgotten the structure of the run-down old city, the paint peeling off the decrepit buildings, the whole city cast into greyscale like a silent movie from all the dust and debris that still littered the area. He hadn't forgotten what it had been like to live there during his time with the Tsin - D never forgot things as a rule, but he couldn't even forget those years even if he had tried.
---
Within less than an hour, the black fox found himself sitting in front of a small pile of decent prey. A couple birds, a few rodents... a rabbit or two. The amount didn't really matter to him - it was their purpose that he was concerned about.
Now then.
From a nearby bush he plucked a few berries, picking the largest he could find that were unblemished. By themselves, these berries were very nutritious, and commonly eaten by passing canines who happened to be in the area. However... with a little coaxing using the powers he wielded as a sibyl... they would soon become something much more potent.
Opening the mouths of the animals he had killed, D murmured something under his breath before tipping the newly-created mixture into their bodies, hidden from external view. By the time any canine ate these, it would be far too late.
You see, D never forgot his grievances, and especially towards those of the Pareil Pack.

ooc . ooh, D. x'33 okay, soo . . . what would you like to happen here, with the poison and all? because like, keina can't die. cx so maybe someone ( like a CPU of some sort ) could die, but she didn't trust him so she didn't eat his prey? a CPU like mr. mutt-servant down there? XD -| prods laeco xx; somehow this is starting to remind me of the series redwall . . . cx
bic . Keina blinked as the mutt returned, another pigeon, a mouse, and a sparrow in his jaws. It wasn't much, but it was good enough. She smiled cruelly as the male glanced at her nervously. "Err . . . I-I'm sorry it ain't much, yer Majesty," the dog muttered, legs trembling. "But I tried as best I could, honestly."
Keina winked at him. "Ah, no worries . . . excuse me, but what is your name?" The brown and white male sniffed, whiskers twitching in surprise. That wasn't what he had expected. His curled tail wagged slightly and his ears, his left one brown and the right one white, rose eagerly. Perhaps he would get a reward, like a promotion of some sort! Oh, he'll get a promotion. Definitely. She narrowed her eyes.
The male's amber eyes twinkled like the stars above. "M'name's Laeco. Just Laeco, ma'am." Keina flicked her tail to acknowledge his words. "Well, Laeco, congratulations. You seem loyal enough. You are now promoted to the status of commander. As commander, you will be in charge of organization. You can start by arranging that feast I mentioned. I'm sure you know how to work with servants," her eyes glimmered darkly, "if not, just give them a good whack and they'll do their job."
Laeco barked with joy. He nodded happily, drool flying everywhere. "Y-yes, ma'am! I'll do that right now!!" The newly-made commander had just turned to gather the servants when Keina ordered him back. "Oh, and we'll be expecting a visitor soon. His name is D. Be sure to put the prey he catches somewhere special." She flicked her ears and glanced about, as if about to tell a secret. Laeco leaned forward to listen as she whispered gently, "He's a sibyl. He's sure to catch a lot of excellent prey, and this prey will be yours if you organize this feast correctly."
Laeco gasped with amazement. He held his tail straight, as if in a salute, and scurried off. Oh, he'd heard of the sibyls - that they could make their prey so juicy and delicious. He smirked. How stupid is our leader? Giving away good prey like that! He had no idea that his fate would be soon decided.

I probably should've cleared that up in my last post. ^^; Yeah - whatever happens if up to you, really. C: Of course Keina isn't going to die, or anyone important. Feel free to do whatever you see fit. ^^

True to his trade, D left a couple animals untouched and un-poisoned, just so it would take a bit longer for the suspicion to be cast on him. He was well aware though that by tomorrow night, he would no longer be welcome in the Pareil Pack grounds, and most likely would be risking his life doing this if the maned wolf had anything to say for the rest of the canines under her command. But it would be worth it. Besides, he would make it out alive.
Somehow, D always did.
That completed, by this time the moon was quite high in the sky. He had promised to make his way to Sien by the time the moon was at its peak, hadn't he? Well, time to head off then. With a swish of his tail and a final smile at his product, he picked up the pieces of prey he had managed to catch, and trotted off (albeit a little unsteadily considering how much he was carrying) towards the abandoned city nearby. The tall arching skyscrapers shone out like steel sentinels against the black of the night, illuminated by the ghostly pale moonlight that streamed out over the paved roads.
---
Ahhh, it had been so long since he'd been here. Within a few minutes, he stood in front of the large, abandoned old building (which was in better shape than most of the others in the area) that served as the main base for the Pareil Pack. If he remembered correctly...
"Excuse me - do you happen to be Count D, by any chance?" The sound of the new voice caught the loner's attention, and he turned, dropping the heap of prey at his paws, to face the large German Shepherd that had addressed him.
With a nod, he smiled. "I am. May I help you somehow?"
The dog seemed to beam with joy when he realized he'd found the right canine, and nodded professionally, trying to appear very confident and dignified. "We've been expecting you - if you will, please drop your prey off here." With a flick of his tail, he indicated a raised crate that stood at the end of the alleyway. Silently and pleasantly, D complied, and then turned once more when the dog addressed him again.
"You are more than welcome to stay the night for the feast tomorrow, honored guest. We've prepared a private room for you, if you'd like."

the small fox screeched, while the even smaller fox trotted behind him, carrying the gun neatly in its jaws. Oh, he was NOT in a good mood, no he was not. He'd probably be in an even worse mood in a bit. Sho Minamimoto, leader (somehow) of the Pareil pack, and lover of trash. Yeah, that was right, he adored it. But not... this. The cardboard box that had been brought to him just mere seconds ago, with a whimpered- he later said sneered- apology that they couldn't find anything better. Swiftly, the Fennec lunged, tearing off a good portion of skin. The canine yelped, darting away, and the dimunitive fox, the smallest of all the species, tossed the small scrap of flesh away, proceeding to tear apart said box. Ooh, boy, he was in a foul mood. 'This. This is pure... idiocy! If they were No. i flares, like me, then everything would be zetta perfect!'In a huff, he trotted into the encampment others before him had chosen- and he didn't have any plans to change locations. Yet. This one suited him just fine, and besides, he'd have to take the matter up with keina, then he'd 'listen' to the pack members' advice, really just tuning it out and using none of it that didn't agree with what Keina and him decided. But almost as soon as he was in, there were canines bustling around, startling him. They were talking about a feast... And of course they didn't respect him enough to tell him, though he hadn't gotten to be one of the leaders by being promoted. Oh, no, he'd proven he was BETTER than every one of those mangy, flea-ridden mounds of fat, oh yes he had! So they had reason to respect him. Still, he had to calm down. Hopefully it was just in celebration of spring, so he wouldn't have to do much, and it would just be ordinary. He didn't believe it, not at all. He couldn't recall them EVER having a celebration of the seasons on their part of Laein. He wasn't too sure about the rest; his siblings and cousins and whatnot were too far scattered to be of any use, and quite frankly he just did not like them one bit. Therefore, it came to him as reasonable to go up to his mate- just in name, they held no strong, unnecessarily strong bonds of love for each other, or at least he didn't really love her too much, just enough to meet the satisfaction of everyone else so that people, err, canines wouldn't be accusing them of not loving each other enough. And that, he did. Go up to Keina, that is, fur bristling, eyes narrowed like usual. "A feast. A zetta-sprinking feast. What the digit is this about?!" It was amazing how they'd managed to remember some of the names in 'marth-or-whatever' from somewhat long ago. Then again, his family had had a knack for such stuff. He sat his rear down petulantly, frowning. Why didn't anyone tell him this?! Oh, wait, must have been decided while he was gone, which meant Keina was plotting. Good old Keina.[/ul]

ooc . ahah, i've already thought of something evil . . . cx no worries, keina won't be killing him or anything. && sorry for my extremely long posts recently, i felt that i should just delve into the life of the pareil.
bic . Soon Keina heard the voices of a servant and their expected guest - Count D. She smiled and swept her long, spotted tail across the ground of the carpet. Right now she was in her den, which was the room upstairs. Indeed, her story was much cleaner than the one down the stairs. She smiled as Sho appeared. "Oh, just you wait, Sho. Just you wait. Soon I will reveal it all to you."
The carpet in this room was almost completely clean, perhaps stained or ragged in only a few spots. A small area of wooden tile was in the right corner of the room; it gleamed brightly, unlike the dull and dirty tiled floor below. A large, blue, mangled couch stood in the center of the room - however, it was still in pristine condition. Blue pillows, which actually appeared black due to the dirt and dust that had collected on them, were strewn across the floor. Several of the higher-ranked canines slept on those.
Keina, of course, slept on the couch. It was her throne, so to say. Her servants always kept this room clean; although, yes, they did not have hands or real cleaning utensils, they had managed to create small objects that resembled feather dusters. They had gathered the plumage of an owl and strung it together with several laces of grass. A few servants, which the pack called 'workers,' created the household objects - they made the feather-dusters and everything else. Along with this, the workers used turtle shells for collecting water for the cleaning; they used sharp, dagger-like stones to pierce holes on either side of the shell, and strung thick string through the holes. Thus the dogs could carry the shells in their jaws without fear of spilling the water.
The pack also used these "buckets" to carry water or food to the sickly or wounded. Workers also had managed to gather sponges from several of the ruined human households; these were used for scrubbing the couch, pillows, and carpet with water. It would seem silly, but if a canine pressed their paws into the sponge and moved it back and forth, it would clean out most of the dirt and stains. Of all the packs, the Pareil was the most advanced - they based most of their society around the life of the humans, slowly learning new techniques and gaining new knowledge.
Keina sat on her so-called "throne," which was actually the couch, as servants tediously swept dust off the floor and pillows. She winked at Sho. "We have a visitor today . . . a very nice occasion. I'm sure you'll remember him, or you've at least heard of him." Suddenly her eyes flared with rage. "I need a damned servant over here. There's still dust on the back of my throne." She rolled her eyes angrily as a servant quickly scampered to the throne. She flicked the feather-duster over the couch, knocking away the dust and dirt that had collected there. Finally, someone knows how to do their job.
"You," Keina growled at the female who had dusted the throne. She looked up nervously; the female was brown and black. Unlike most of the servants, she was skinny, but no ribs showed from her hips. The leader noticed this. "You, what is your name?"
"Ilec, your majesty," the female said in a bell-like voice. "Ilec," Keina tasted the word on her tongue. "Please, go fetch Count D. I can hear him from here; bring him here to me, please, and you will get extra servings at our feast tomorrow night for such diligent work." Ilec smile and dipped her head, along with it her body; she also slid one of her forepaws forward before she quickly straightened her back and ran down the stairs. That was the traditional way of a curtsy for a servant.
"Count D," Ilec panted as she neared the black canine. "Keina was expecting you. Please, come with me." She dipped her head but did not curtsy - curtsies were only due to the leaders. With a quick glance over her shoulder, the dog leapt up the stairs.
Meanwhile, eyes glimmered from the deep shadows behind the food-crate. Laeco chuckled to himself as he picked out all the prey that carried Count D's scent. It wasn't hard to find them, as they were still warm and the loner's scent was still strong on them. He quickly rushed off, the food dangling precariously in his jaws, before he dropped it in a secured corner of the building. He glanced over his shoulder once and covered the prey with a tattered blanket. My prey! He growled quietly, malice glimmering in his eyes; with one last glance at the blanket, he charged off to find someone to order around. After all, he was commander.

Alright!
bic||
Not long after he dropped off his prey, a new canine came bounding along - a rather small young female dog. Approaching him, she gave a dip of her head out of acknowledgement and respect, and then bid him come along. After all, Keina was waiting for him. D didn't doubt that - he didn't doubt that she had already seen him coming and was using her servants to fetch him. From what things looked like around here, everything was more or less in ruin except for the upper floors of this building. As he nodded and calmly followed the eager Pareil dog up the steps to the hgher floor where no doubt the leaders were situated, D caught, out of the corner of his eye, another dog eagerly snatching up one of the pieces of prey he had brought.
A slow smile curved his lips, but he said nothing.
After climbing several flights of stairs and crossing to the end of the worn-down hallway, they stood in front of the door to what used to be a conference room, by the looks of things. However, those days had long passed away, and the name plaque that was mounted on the wall was overgrown with vines and the paint had all but been scratched away and decayed. The female dog stopped in front of the door and stepped to the side, indicating for him to go in. "Please. Keina is waiting for you. And it's best not to make her wait." Here, a flash of fear entered her eyes.
The Count nodded. "Of course," he replied, pleasantly but mysteriously, and then slipped into the room, the door easing shut behind him. Before him he saw Keina, the maned wolf, seated regally upon a worn-out couch in the back of the room. A group of canines of all kinds were bustling about her and the room, making repairs, cleaning, the works. He knew these were the servants - that hadn't changed since the days of her father. Beside her sat another canine - a small fennec fox, who held himself with that same self-important posture.
At the sight of him, D swished his tail. How could he forget this guy? "Hello Keina," he began with casual ease, "I see preparations for the feast are under way." Here he stepped forward, long lashes sweeping down over hooded mismatched eyes. "And Sho. A face I have not forgotten."

Keina blinked as Count D entered the room. She glanced at Sho. "You see, Sho, I told you there was someone important coming to visit us. Now, mind your manners around him, we don't want our guests to be upset before the party." Her gaze returned to the Count. "Hello, Count D. You see, much has changed over the years. Sho is now my . . . associate, so to say. He's the male leader of this pack."
Keina chuckled. No doubt he would find the prospect of an African Wild Dog and a Fennec Fox as mates bewildering. "We cannot have pups, but we get along well nonetheless. Besides, I find I have no use or want for pups nowadays." She sighed.
"Anyway, Count D, the building has not changed since my father's reign. But I do try to keep it cleaner and stronger here. So . . . how was your hunt? I assume you did well? If not, do not fret, we have plenty of prey for that feast tomorrow." Keina winked charmingly, and her tail flicked over her "mate's" head. To the eyes of all others, it would seem a loving gesture, but both she and the other leader knew it was for one purpose - a small warning to keep his mouth shut unless he needed to speak.

Associate? Had D been the type of canine to chuckle at that wording, he would have. But true to himself and to the situation, he kept his maw shut and simply maintained the serene smile that never left his expression. The male leader of the pack... indeed, Sho had risen quite a bit in rank since D had last been here... it had been so long. He didn't doubt that in the Pareil pack, rank was decided based on power, rather than on mate selection as it was in some of the other packs. He had little doubt that Sho and Keina didn't actually have anything in common besides a shared desire for power.
Even so, it wasn't in his place to say that now. After all, he hadn't come here to pick a fight. Oh no. He came here for the feast - and what a grand feast it would be.
With keen eyes he watched as the servants glanced up every now and then from their work to snatch a glimpse of him. Word had traveled fast through the pack that an honored guest was coming, and they all wanted to see the fox that Keina treated so well - they were so accustomed to their leader acting with cruelty and brutality that this kind of behavior was odd. But they dared not shirk their duties for even one moment, for fear of retribution from their leader.
"Of course - I can see the improvement," D replied tactfully, nodding as he glanced around the place. Some little renovation had been done, namely to seal the window shut that had always been open, he remembered, during her father's reign. Hearing her voice again, he nodded. "The hunt went well, thank you," he answered smoothly, his expression never faltering for even a moment. "I couldn't very well attend a feast without offering my own portion. That would have been downright rude of me."

It seemed zetta wasn't his version of a swear word, unlike factor and digit, though it could be used as one. If asked what zetta meant, he'd reply simply that a zetta was a zetta. His eyes narrowed- if someone was royalty, he highly believed that they should be treated as such. Therefore, it only befitted him that he snarl upon hearing a servant did not do their duty properly. He cast his gaze leisurely to his own sleeping spot, a luxurious arm chair which he'd decorated to his liking, involving copious quantities of the color grey and red. He didn't trust anyone not to mess it up, so he cared for it himself. Mention of Count D brought him thinking... He'd gazed upon the Tsin once before, witnessed it being flung, and ever since then had been besotted with it. If only he could find it... He'd considered many times before sending a good amount of canines to search for it, in the hope that one day him or maybe an incredibly capable duo of leaders would find it, and avenge their memory, the memory of the wronged Pareil pack. He held little taste for gods, and quite frankly, only believed that they existed to create him. Maybe his mate, not Keina, but if he ever found a true mate. That was unlikely, though, for he hated most of those he met. "You know, we haven't tried cooking..." Sho said lazily, thinking. He was talking about ways in which they could become more modern, more like the humans who had accomplished quite a bit before they were wiped out. He was one of their most ardent admirers, constantly trying to walk on both legs like them, figure out how to use their paws like them, even see if they could wear clothes like them. None of this was likely, however, but... His eyes narrowed even more when Count D came in. He didn't even bother giving a stiff nod, just a soft growl of acknowledgment- he'd never show respect to most canines unless he truly believed that they were better than him, or at least almost as 'divine' as him. This arrogance of his was well-known, at least around the Pareil pack. When consorting with others from different packs, he would sometimes pretend to be courteous, respectful, and humble. Heh. What he wouldn't give to see them all bow down before the Pareil, more specifically the leaders. The soft growl he'd been emitting hitched in his throat, then rose a few decibels when Keina swept her tail over his eyes- it would seem like he hated signs of affection, which he very well probably did, but he knew the action was far from loving. Still, he did his part as the kind host, following Keina's hostess routine. "Shall I show you to your undoubtedly zetta-comfortable sleeping quarters? It would be... unfortunate if a welcomed hectopascal such as yourself were to catch ill because of our negligence," he said, a grin on his face- to most, it seemed he was perfectly kind, like he was supposed to be. However, he bet most of the pack could see it for what it really was- like a shark that had spotted the fattest, juiciest seal, and by miracles, it didn't have the sense to swim away. Or it just didn't notice. He knew that, of course, Count D would be smarter than that- but that was what made this euqation so fun. D was just a variable in his plans, which he hoped he could easily correct should something go wrong. "Or I could perhaps go decorate the place. Perhaps some monuments or such?"[/ul]

Keina smiled maliciously and glanced at her mate. Cooking, eh? I suppose we could figure that out. Yes, and then the other packs would steal our ideas, like the mobbing group of idiots they are . . . they're so incapable of discovering their own secrets. They all have their precious Thriene, while we are stuck with learning to become humans. Psh. We'll show them!
Keina, unlike her mate, didn't much care for the Tsin. She would love to have it in her clutches, but only to show that the Pareil - no, that she - was powerful. Greed made her want to be stronger than everyone else in the Feirn, all over the world. She wanted her pack to be the possessor of the Tsin, the Fiene, the strongest of all three Thriene - even the gods would envy them.
Keina smirked. Hah, the gods! They wouldn't be able to interfere this time . . . no. Definitely not. For not only would they retrieve the Tsin, they would use the magic of the sibyls to block them out. Count D was just one of the many sibyls they had already gathered; yet he was one of the arch sibyls, one of the strongest. And their plan was soon to take place. Very, very soon.
Keina swept her tail gently over Sho's ears warningly. "Now, now, Sho. No need for sarcasm here . . . this is a time for joyous ceremonies. And besides, you have no need to show D where he'll be sleeping. Because he will be sleeping in this room tonight - the room for the honored canines." She winked at the Count.
"You see, D, we have been longing for the company of a sibyl. Excuse the way it may seem, but it brings hope back to our pack. Hope of return. No, we do not want wars or death," Keina added modestly, "but we would like to let the others know that the Pareil is a pack too. We are guilty for our recent misdeeds, and we wish for a new reign - a reign of peacefulness. Not just here, but between all of the packs. And with your power, the mothers and elders, who have recently been unsettled, will gain hope in us."
She sighed sadly. "But of course, it is your choice on whether you stay with us or not after the feast. Still, just the knowledge that you are watching over us pleases the restless nurses." Keina smiled. "Now. . . I suppose we ought to sleep now, eh? It sure is late."
The leader glared at her servants. "Servants! I want you to take Count D to the nicest sleeping-pillow in this room. Keep him company and respond to his every request without hesitation." As she spoke to a group of servants clustered in a corner of the room, a silent signal passed from her to them. It was just the way she spoke and looked - the slightest glimmer of malice in her eyes, the barely noticeable agitated flick of her ears, the way her lips slightly curved upward. They knew what to do. They would watch him silently, relaying his every movement and word to her; for these servants were not just servants. They were specially trained for one purpose - spying. Of course, D wouldn't know; that was the point.

At Keina's extended invitation, D bowed his head slightly, swishing his tail in gentle acknowledgement. It seemed to be that Keina had the more power between the two of them, though D wasn't going to be so quick to judge. He wouldn't put it past her though - if she was anything like her father, she was a bloodthirsty and cruel ruler. And he didn't think that those nervous looks from the servants were all for show, either. The Pareil Pack would never change.
"Of course," he murmured in reply to her request. "I will remain here as long as I see fit. As soon as my work here is done, you will see no more of me." He dipped his head again, but there was nothing in his tone or body language that might suggest even the slightest hint of disrespect to the she wolf. After all, he had left his words vague enough - how the Pareil Pack wished to interpret them was their choosing, and did not concern him. He had no doubt in his mind though that what she said about peace and hope were all lies. Pareil canines had no place in their hearts for hope or tranquility. They lived off the blood and despair of others - of this he was sure. He knew that her words translated directly into 'we would like you to stay and help us regain our once invincible power. And we will make it so you do stay.'
After that, he wordlessly allowed himself to be led from the audience in front of Keina and to another couch nearby which he could see had been prepared for his arrival. There was no hint of dust or dirt on the upholstery, and the pillows looked lush and comfortable - any loner's dream after sleeping in bushes and upon piles of leaves for years. He had to give them credit - this looked wonderful. With urging from the servants, D leaped elegantly onto the pillow and settled himself upon it, his tail swishing before it wrapped around his paws. "Beautiful," he remarked to Keina and Sho with a flawless smile. "I commend your efforts at keeping this building in workable state."
