The impact was a sudden one, and definitely not one she'd been expecting at the least. One moment they'd been running full speed, the wind billowing through her fur like it had on that wonderful day by the river, the clouds high in the sky, the feeling of fine grass beneath her paws. It was a divine feeling, to simply be able to run... run, and never stop. It was as if she could fly - as if, if she leaped into the air high enough, she would suddenly sprout wings and -
BAM.
A sharp gasp of pain was torn from her maw as she collided straight with the still form of Zak. She hadn't been looking where she was going - she'd been so caught up in the freedom of the moment that it hadn't occurred to her that he had stopped running. They tumbled head over paws for a couple meters, until finally they came to a bumpy stop, and it was a few seconds before her head stopped spinning.
When at last she had her bearings again, she looked down and realized she was sprawled over the larger wolf, and a blush spread over her fur as she untangled herself from him and attempted to get off Zak without stepping on him. Confusion flashed in her eyes beneath the embarrassment, and when she finally managed to extricate herself from the fall, she frowned slightly in worry. "Are you okay? I'm sorry about crashing into you - why'd you sto - whoa!"
She hadn't realized it, but they had stopped rolling dangerously close to the river, and when she had managed to get up and off the male wolf, she had accidentally set her forepaw in an unstable plot of muddy riverbank soil, and as the dirt have given way beneath her weight, she toppled to the side, losing her balance, and splashed right into the river, not unlike Zak had done when they'd first met.
Moments later, her head popped up above water again, and she shook her fur. For a moment amused irritation flickered in her eyes, and then she looked up at Zak and began to laugh. It started as a grin that cracked across her maw, and then she giggled, which turned into a laugh. "I'm just like you now!' she exclaimed happily as she dragged herself up onto the riverbank again, shaking the water droplets out of her fur.

Though she had been hindering his breath, Zak watched with unreadable eyes as Cooro carefully stepped off and away. Could she hear his hammering heart? Had she felt it? It's just from running, Zak assured himself as he rolled onto his paws, steadying himself. Of course one's heart would be racing after all that running... yeah, that's it... right? But now wasn't the time for doubt.
As Zak shook the loose grass from his pelt, attempting to smooth it so it wasn't sticking up in ridiculous places, Cooro began to speak. But just as he was turning his attention towards her once more, a yelp cut off her sentence, followed by a splash of water. Suddenly alert and forgetting his appearance, Zak rushed towards the river bank, staring into its depths. "Cooro?!"
But he needn't have worried. In another moment, the she-wolf's head bobbed upwards, breaking the water's surface. She stood there, looking perplexed and a bit surprised, before giggling it all away as she caught his eye. What, was his expression funny? Missing her innocent cause of laughter, he moved to help her out, but she seemed to have it under control. Backing away, his look of genuine concern remained stubbornly on his face, eyes narrowing and frown deepening; she could've been hurt, and here she was, laughing? It was only when she pointed out the likeness they had shared -- both taking a dip into the river -- that he relaxed and gave in. He gave a small grin, allowing himself to emit a nervous chuckle that soon somersaulted into full-blown laughter, and the two wolves basked in the sound of each other's voices.
"Hey, I just dried off," Zak muttered, a joking tone in his accusation, as a few droplets from Cooro's shaking landed on his fur. His laughter died away and he stood there, smiling serenely, watching the she-wolf before him. He looked as if he was in a light daze, unbothered by his ego or self-conscious thoughts for once. It was a look he hadn't worn for years.

It was when he began laughing that Cooro realized she liked the sound of his voice - resonating with barking laughter, it seemed very different from his earlier tone, smooth, charming, and now... it seemed to her, almost a little bit of a show. He seemed to even talk differently now, though she hadn't noticed until just this moment - he didn't use the formal words he had when they'd first met, and he was more... open, it looked like. Glad this change was taking place, Cooro inspected herself for any scratches.
Thankfully though, it looked like she'd escaped that little fall unscathed. Of course, some parts of her pelt were still sticking up slightly, despite the water smoothing down most of it. Typical. It was a family trait thing - unruly fur. She lived with it.
As their laughter died down, she smiled and took a good look at him. He even looked different now. Whereas before his expression had always been calm and he'd always worn a look of casual, cool composure that she, at the time, had found quite endearing, now... he seemed much more relaxed. His shoulders had stopped having that hint of tenseness to them, and his eyes had acquired that familiar glow of being with a good friend. Cooro decided she liked this look much better - it seemed to suit his personality more.
A gentle, playful Zak to match his gentle, playful expression.
"Sorry again," she apologized once more, since her last one had been unceremoniously cut short. With a few quick licks she attempted to tame the tufts of fur sticking up on her shoulder, to little avail. "But why'd you stop? You looked like you were having a lot of fun."

"Oh no, it was nothing, nothing at all," Zak found himself saying with another grin before he was thinking entirely clear. He blinked, bringing himself down to earth, and realized that's probably what he would've said if he had been thinking. He really needed to get his head on straight.
Why'd you stop?
The question froze Zak's limbs, causing his mind to reel back and remember what had occurred before their tumble through the grass. Sweeping his tail behind him, it was then that the flashback from earlier was brought to the front of his mind. Yes... the conversation with Angeal that he had forgotten about.
Well... what to tell her?
The truth was probably best... he'd regret lying to Cooro. "I suddenly recalled something," the male wolf finally answered, slightly lowering his head as if a bit guilty. "It... it was a talk I had with my older brother, Angeal, the one I told you about." Eyeing Cooro again, Zak doubted if he should tell her what it was about... but she'd probably ask anyway, and for some reason he felt that it was almost right to let her know.
Sighing, he beckoned her with a nod of the head to follow, and the two took a seat in the shade. Wrapping his furry tail around his haunches, Zak looked extremely uncertain, almost nervous. There was a lapse of silence between them, in which birds twittered to one another, oblivious to the wolves below. "He... he was talking to me a few days ago about how I was living my life... how I act around others and how it might affect my life later on." Zak took his eyes off the grass and looked upwards to the clouds. "He said I was taking life for granted... and that I should be serious when it comes to having a mate... to not flirt with all the she-wolves in the pack and act like it's nothing." Almost reluctantly, Zak looked back to Cooro. "For some reason... when I looked back at you, this memory was triggered. I don't know quite why myself," he murmured, shaking his head, "but I have a feeling..." Zak looked straight into Cooro's eyes. "You're different from the other girls."

When she asked what he'd been thinking about, Zak's expression changed into one of troubled nostalgia, and she wondered briefly if she should have asked. Maybe he didn't want to talk about it. "Of course he doesn't, bonehead! Leave him alone already!" She could already hear Husky's voice in her head, and briefly her mind wandered to how amusing it was that she knew her brother so well he was practically her second conscious.
But then Zak began speaking, and from the tone of his voice she immediately understood this was something important to him. He no longer held the carefree look in his eyes, and when he beckoned her over to sit with him beneath the lone tree, she followed silently and curiously, waiting to hear what he had to say. She wanted him to know that he could trust her with whatever he had to say - she would not tell anyone if he didn't want her to.
When at least he spoke, she listened attentively, nodding slightly. So his brother... he had been thinking about his brother, similar to the way the wind rustled through the grass today had triggered Cooro's memory of her talk with Nana, however short it had been. She opened her mouth to tell him about that, but when she looked up, she found Zak's eyes peering deeply into her own, as if scanning her right down to the soul, and she suddenly felt very vulnerable. However, she returned it with a smile, meant to be comforting. "I'm... different? Well, maybe, I guess. I was just thinking that you're different too, Zak. You're not like the other males I know."
She paused for a moment, and then her smile flickered and faded away into a faraway look as she gazed out at the waving grassland, the stalks bending and swaying under the coaxing breeze. "I had been thinking too... about something Nana asked me once. It was a simple question - nothing like what your brother said, but she was completely serious when she asked me what I thought about settling down and having pups of my own..."
Golden eyes dimmed slightly as she thought of this. Angeal had told Zak to watch out for his own life - to really give his living a second thought and rethink how he was going about his days. Though at the time Cooro had thought nothing of Nana's question, now she understood why her sister had asked it. All this time, she'd been so caught up in the fun of day-to-day life that she'd never even considered finding a mate before. That had been completely out of her league.
But, as Husky never failed to remind her, she was twenty-seven years old now, and it was high time she 'grew up', as he liked to call it. "I just laughed and said I was too busy having fun with life. I didn't think it was possible to have fun and be with someone too. But now... hm, I'm not so sure. Being around you sure is fun."

So his confession was out... well, it was more like an honest statement that would've sounded awkward if he had admitted it when he had first realized it. But whatever it was called hardly mattered at this moment. It felt good to relieve it from his chest Zak realized as he exhaled softly, his eyes dropping to the side. All these new feelings flooding him for the first time today was emotionally exhausting, but it was hardly over. Not that he necessarily wanted it to be...
Zak also wanted to assure Cooro that different wasn't necessarly a negative thing. He was afraid that his message had come across as blunt and rude, but his hesitation and regret slowly withered away as she acknowledged that she felt the same way -- he wasn't like the others. At first it didn't surprise him; of course he stood out from the other males. They weren't flirtatious (and successful at it), they didn't send a wink or a bow at every she-wolf they saw. But the more Zak thought about it, he suspected that Cooro meant something else -- something positive.
It was then that Zak ever so slowly stood, the fluid movement gone unnoticed by the she-wolf he faced, who was explaining her own recollection. Half of his mind was aware of this action, the other was not. So was this the feeling Angeal had told him about one day, back when he had first met his own mate? "At first I was so nervous," he had said, "I was unable to think straight. My emotions were all in a tornado and it felt unreal and frightening." And look where Angeal was now. Yep, that was the exact description of Zak's emotions at this time. But no, it couldn't be. He had only met Cooro today (though she had been born into the Ventura pack just like him), and Angeal had known his love for a few months! Yet... Zak felt himself move a step foward.
As Cooro mentioned the word "pups", his mind was sent into another spin. Pups. Sure, he had seen them romping about; he was even an uncle, as Angeal had a large litter himself. But he had never considered having any of his own, to become a father... well, he was about the right age to start a family. But had he ever considered, apart from pups at all, who would mother them...?
Shaking away the thought -- he was getting carried away; he needed to think about the now -- Zak soon found himself nose-to-nose with Cooro, just as she finished her last sentence. "Being around you sure is fun." Another silence stretched between the two as Zak's heart pounded, the tip of his tail twitching, as if to say, Zak, what the hell are you thinking?!
"I'm not so sure, either," he murmured quietly, brown eyes glimmering; "but... if you feel that way... then I surely feel the same... towards you."
[Ooc// Oh, I do hope I'm not overdo-ing it! Dx I get so carried away! Ack.]

ooc|| xDDD Don't worry about it, Fay!

Cooro had been so busy speaking and thinking about her own story and life that she hadn't even noticed when Zak had stood up - to his credit though, he'd made hardly a noise. Not even the grass had rustled when he'd moved, so she wouldn't have heard anything. She hadn't been looking in his direction, and so when she finally turned, finished speaking at last, she found herself face to face with him, and the distance between them had been closed significantly.
Her first reaction was surprise, and a bit of fear. How had he gotten so close? On instinct, she scooted back a little bit, regarding him with surprise in her now-wide golden eyes. But then he spoke, and something about the way he said those words - not really the words themselves - sent her heart all a-flutter.
Her reaction surprised her too. She'd never felt like this before. And that butterfly in her chest - what did it mean? "You... feel the same?" she murmured, still surprised to see Zak suddenly so serious and heartfelt. She could tell that by admitting to her what he'd been thinking, he had opened up a whole new part of himself that, she was willing to bet, few others ever saw. The earnest look in his eyes made her pelt tingle with anxiety but also something else... something she didn't understand and had never experienced before.
She wanted to put this on hold for a moment and go ask someone about what this was, but realized she had no one to ask. None of her other siblings had a mate, or even felt that way towards anyone. Was this what it felt like, to be... in love?
But she'd only met him today. Was that possible? She'd heard some of the other females swoon and say something about love at first sight - was this what it was? "So... how exactly... do you feel?" she murmured, not daring to raise her voice to high, for fear of breaking the moment between them or startling him.

When Cooro inched herself backwards, golden eyes wide, Zak instantly felt self-conscious and regretful, backing away a step or two as well. His ears lowered a bit, and he internally berated himself for being such a forward fool. How come Angeal never gave me any tips for things like this? Probably 'cuz he hadn't expected Zak to actually fall for one particular she-wolf...
Feeling the need to apologize and run to hide his face somewhere in the woods, Zak began to stutter a few incoherent words until Cooro stopped him, quietly determining whether he truly felt the same way. At that point, he finally met her gaze again, halting mid-sentence. "I, ah..." Now he was at a loss. He hadn't expected her to want him to stay, let alone explain himself. He honestly needed to think farther ahead in the future. If only he could go back in time...
But wasn't this also what he wanted? A second chance?
How did he feel... How did he feel? Steadying his nerves, Zak flicked his tail, its furry gray mass caressing the ground like a paintbrush. He closed his eyes, focusing on taming his wild heart. He only had one chance at this -- this was it, or he'd lose it forever. Now was the time to go with what his gut was telling him; his heart was confused and his mind wasn't working correctly. It wasn't like he was surrounded by the entire pack... it was just Cooro and he. He felt like he could tell her just about anything...
Anything except for what he felt deep inside.
"Cooro," Zak began, clearing his throat; it felt incredibly dry. "I, well... like I said, you're different from the rest... but... but in this instance, different is a good thing. I never realized it before, but... but all the she-wolves that were constantly swooning around me... they were, well, all the same. And I think... they were just after my looks, not... me." Zak felt the puzzle pieces coming together, Angeal's words the base for them all, Cooro his inspiration. Everything was at least beginning to make sense now... "And, I... um, well, if I were to... to settle down with someone, I'd like it to be someone who..." Zak tentatively met Cooro's gaze. "... who likes me for who I am. And you're... you're the first one who hasn't fallen completely for my charm or 'bewitching good looks', as the others call it." He managed a small chuckle.
"And... well, I'm just gonna say it. Feel free to reject everything I say, I'm probably just rambling on like a babbling brook anyway, not making an iota of sense, and this is kind of sudden... But, if you'll hear me out..." Zak took a deep breath, steeling his shoulders and standing up a bit taller. "Cooro, I think I've literally fallen head-over-paws in love with you."

Love. What a foreign word. She listened to him intently as he spoke, not even daring to move a muscle for fear of disrupting him or dissuading him from continuing. She didn't want to seem at all apprehensive of what he was about to tell her, and so she didn't even so much as flick an ear or swish her tail while he talked. All the other she-wolves were the same. She was different. She accepted him for who he was, didn't love him for his dashing figure or charming smile.
And after he spoke, a thick silence descended upon them then. She was unsure what to say in return. Did she love him too? Was he even sure he loved her? But we've only known each for an hour, she wanted to say, tilting her head in curious, innocent confusion. From what she'd heard of the elders of love, it took time to develop. The young ones always mistook lust and obsession for love, but in reality love was a deep connection between two canines that took time to form and root itself in their hearts.
It was a cheesy speech that Husky always scoffed at, though he'd stalk out blushing, but it had enraptured Cooro. What an idea.
Never thought it would happen to her though. Do I... love him, too? This feeling... it's not the kind of deep connection I was thinking about, but... I do feel something. She was a bit confused now, but finally raised her head. She had to say something soon, or else Zak would think she was rejecting him, and she wasn't. "Zak... are you sure?" she murmured carefully, though her eyes held no rejection or rebuke, only open concern and curiosity. "Are you sure I'm the right one? I don't even know anything about love."
She glanced down at her paws, and in the process caught sight of a tuft of stubborn fur on her chest. Suddenly self-conscious, she licked swiftly at it until it stood flat against her collarbone, at least for the time being. "Maybe those other females... did you ever give them a chance to get to know you, Zak, for who you are? You are charming and wonderful and a great wolf, but... did you ever let them get to know the real you? The real Zak? Like I do?"

Was he sure? Positively not. There was absolutely no way Zak was entirely convinced that Cooro was the one for him at this given moment... maybe he had rushed things. Maybe he was so shaken by Angeal's words and his unsteady emotions that he had thrown his common sense to the wind and forsaken patience. Maybe he had made the greatest mistake in his life so far.
"Neither do I, for that matter," Zak sighed, shaking his head, adding more quietly, "true love, at least." The wolf lowered himself again onto the grass, the stalks bending under his weight. "I honestly don't know if you're the one for me... not yet, anyway. And I apologize for being so forward... this is all so new for me, too."
Glad that Cooro had at least heard him out and not turned tail, Zak watched as a pair of doves flittered away, twisting in each other's paths and cooing gently. When they had finally disappeared from sight, Zak turned his attention back to the situation at hand. That brief interval of quiet had given him a few moments to think of his next answer; from now on, he'd no longer respond without thought.
"Perhaps I didn't." Zak was being entirely sincere, eyes harboring all kinds of emotions (though anger wasn't among them). "Perhaps I never gave them a chance to know, as you call it, 'the real Zak'. I wasn't thinking about being serious with any of them because they all felt... well, the same. Would it have been any different courting one while I could court ten others like her? Yes, they all looked like their individual selves, but you... you were the only one that was different from the start." Zak flicked his ear, surprised that his heart had calmed to its regular pace... or at least somewhere close. "Perhaps I got too excited after hearing Angeal's words. I am completely understanding towards any response that you have, but no matter what happens... I hope we can remain friends."

The two doves wheeling in the sky was not lost in Cooro's eyes either, and she took the lengthening silence as an opportunity to watch them as they flitted about, chirping delightedly in each others' company. Doves were a symbol of peace, Husky had once told her in a rare moment of introspective philosophy, and harmony. Cooro had, at the time, simply nodded, not really understanding. But now that she thought about it - maybe at this current moment, it meant something?
Maybe Keaid had something in mind for them, and this was the goddess' way of letting them know. Lying down in the lush grass, Cooro tucked her paws beneath her chest and listened to Zak as he began to speak again.
You were the only one who was different from the start. That seemed a little interesting to the black she-wolf. Was she really? Was she really something special in this Pack? Having never really gotten to know many of the other females, she couldn't be the judge of it herself, but hearing this from someone who interacted with so many others seemed to put it in perspective. Maybe there is something else... she pondered, thinking about the two doves that had now winged into the shelter of a tree and could no longer be seen. Maybe what Zak's saying isn't all speculation.
"Of course we can be friends!" Cooro said with a bright smile in his direction, and flicked his playfully over the ears with her bushy tail. She was afraid of losing him as a friend, especially since he had just confessed all this to her. Wouldn't that be a little shameful of her? "I've just never really met any other males like you, and I usually spend my time around my brothers and sister. So all this is so new. But... maybe you're right."
She glanced down at her paws for a moment, which in her speaking had slipped out from under her bulk and were now resting, crossed, in front of her. "I think I feel something for you too, Zak... but I don't really know what it is."

Zak felt a relieved smile spread on his maw, the worry washing away from his eyes. He watched as she instantly became joyful once more, springing to her paws and stepping towards him. He blinked in surprise when she flicked his ears, swaying a bit since he had been caught off-guard.
"Of course," he echoed her, chuckling. Then he stopped, tilting his head a bit.
Wait, what had Cooro said? "But... maybe you're right." Exactly what had he been right about? He yearned to ask her to explain herself, but she had begun to talk once more. Her next few words shocked him, and was stunned into silence -- again. Never before had he been this silent during a conversation... never. Ever since Zak had been able to talk, no one could really get him to calm down or shut his maw. Now look at him. Angeal would've said something along the lines of "Who are you, and what have you done with my brother Zak?" He could just see it now.
Breathing in deeply, Zak raised up the courage to gently touch his nose to the top of Cooro's head before politely retreating again. "I'm afraid I don't quite know either," he murmured, trying to sound as kind as possible, "but if you'd like... I can help you find out what it is."
That is, if I can manage to not ruin this unsteady relationship...

They were so close together now, and somehow Cooro had only just noticed this. Suddenly, she became acutely aware of the brush of his grey-black fur against hers, the deep musky scent dampened by his dip in the river from earlier. She didn't know how she hadn't noticed it earlier, but it became a lot more in tune now. Still, it was oddly comforting, and not comforting in the way that she felt when she was with her siblings during a thunderstorm, but a way that made her paws tingle and made her not want to leave.
Was this what Nana was talking about, when she talked about 'the perfect moment'? The kind that could be suspended in time, the kind that made you wish the sun would never set or the night would never end?
Cooro couldn't believe that, of all her siblings, she was the first one to have this happen to her. For a bit, she couldn't meet Zak's eyes after he said that he would help her discover this alien feeling inside her. She didn't know what to say - she was quite stunned, honestly, by the offer. But... if they could do it, since it seemed that he shared the same strange emotion, if they could it... together. As friends. Or maybe something more. Then maybe... maybe things would be okay.
"Okay," she finally murmured, and lifted her black-furred head, golden eyes meeting Zak's with a hopeful shimmer. She nodded and spoke again. "Okay. Let's do it then. There's no one else I'd rather discover this with than you."
And that, oddly enough, was the truth.

Imagine what Angeal would think if he saw Zak now... or Cloud, for that matter! Zak shuddered internally at the thought of his other brothers, barking with laughter and calling out embaressing comments... but as he sat there with Cooro, her golden eyes glimmering, all thoughts about what others would think melted away. He noticed she had an odd tendency to do that to him. His mind would wander if he looked away, but once he looked in her eyes, it was as if his heart was directly captured, reeling him in.
But no matter what he felt -- even if he was one hundred percent sure he loved her -- he'd take it as slow as she, Cooro, wanted to. And who knew, maybe they'd turn out only as friends anyway. Either way, Zak was just incredibly thankful to have another soul to confide in, to truly call a friend.
He shivered slightly as he felt her silky fur mingle with his, but it wasn't from anything weather-related. Zak vaguely recognized the feeling as pleasureable, a new soothing touch. Sure, he'd felt it before from the other she-wolves, but they had had different intentions when they rubbed their pelts with his... Cooro certainly had something magical about her.
"No matter how long it takes," Zak hummed, "and no matter what it takes. If we're unable to find an answer, I'll bet Angeal or one of your siblings may have a clue. And if not," Zak brightened, "we'll ignore whatever it's called, go with our hearts, and call it whatever we want."

His words were like those straight out of those tales the elders would sometimes tell them, their eyes glowing with nostalgia and a strange sort of adoration that Cooro didn't recognize. She was always fascinated by those fairytale words, but Husky would walk away, insisting that's all they were. Fairy tales. Wouldn't he be surprised to know that those tales were coming true. Here, in real life.
She nodded, a smile still pulling at her lips. "Yeah... maybe Angeal will have more answers though. I'm the first one out of my siblings... the first one that this has happened to." At least, she thought she was. She and her siblings were extremely close, despite what it looked like on the outside sometimes. At least, she thought they were. Husky and Nana and she would always tell each other everything. Even Senri would come by when something major had happened, though he'd never speak, but only listen with attentive ears and then move to wordlessly comfort the one who was feeling down.
She didn't know how they would react to this. Would they believe her, or would they simply say she was overreacting, that this wouldn't last?
But even if they do... I still have Zak. He believes in this as much as I do. She was satisfied with that answer, somehow, and nodded quietly to herself. "I'm sure we'll find out someday," she replied with a cheerful smile towards him. "It'll be just like the old stories. You'll be my knight in shining armor."
She giggled then at the comical idea, and then slowly rose to her paws, feeling a little restless after remaining still for so long. On such a beautiful day, one shouldn't simple be lounging around in the shade. "But if I'm here with now, then we can start our exploring. And this time, it won't be just exploring the territory. Let's go!" She wagged her tail again and darted off into the sunlit fields, glancing back over her shoulder at him. "Race the wind with me, Zak!"
